This is based on Ambleside Online's Pre-7, which uses the Charlotte Mason educational method. Charlotte Mason wrote, 'People naturally fall into two groups: those who read and reflect on what they've read . . . and those who don't. Schools should be making sure that all their students belong to the first group.' You can learn more about Charlotte Mason here. To get the most from this type of education, it's helpful to know the why's and how's of the CM method, which can be found on Ambleside Online's FAQ page.

The reading has been deliberately kept at a slow, steady pace. Three reading per day have been scheduled. When it comes to books, more isn't always better. Less can be more, leaving time and room to reflect and develop a relationship with the books, thereby getting more out of them. Speeding through lots of books isn't helpful if the student doesn't remember much of them.

She should narrate (tell back) to you what she read, detailed, and as much as she can remember, after a single reading. This one exercise developes the attention span, sequencing, memory, and articulation skills. You might also start one written narration per week--but only after both of you understand the concept of narration. Written narration is the beginning of composition.

Language Arts: writing can be practiced with the use of copywork, which is transcribing a well-written work of literature to model good use of word usage and grammar--perhaps an essay, poem, or even some favorite quotes, paying attention to correct spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Copywork should be done every day, between 3 lines to half a page of writing, depending how much she can do neatly at a sitting. It's more about quality than quantity.

Once a week, she can do a studied dictation from one of the week's copywork assignments. She should look at it first, study it, practice writing any words she's unsure of--and then you should read it to her while she writes it, trying to remember spelling and punctuation. The object is for her to study it well enough that there are no mistakes.

Grammar: a grammar book is started in Year 7, but I've found that it's helpful if a student is already familiar with the eight parts of speech before beginning this book. Ambleside Online has a Language Arts scope and sequence here, which may help give some grammar resources.

You can read more about Language Arts in a CM context here.

Art Appreciation:
Go to Ambleside Online's Picture Study page, here.
Select three artists from the website to become familiar with this year. I suggest Mary Cassatt, Winslow Homer, Jan Vermeer or John William Waterhouse. Download the six pictures to your computer, and spend two weeks simply looking at the picture and possibly describing what you see. If you wish, you can read a short online biography of that artist.

Shakespeare:
How do you want to do this?

What do you want to do for poetry?
